More money than meets the eye in UFC

mmanews.tk

Kevin Iole: Yahoo! Sports

One of my passions in life is technology. I'm obsessed with gizmos and gadgets and am all but in love with my iPhone.

A friend who knows about my obsession had a computer he wanted to sell on eBay and asked me what I felt it was worth. He went to a Web site that showed an estimated street value, one I felt was considerably too high.

He argued that his asking price was justified because this web site was made up of experts and they agreed with him.

True, I said, but something is only worth what someone else will pay for it. And when we went to eBay and looked at completed listings for a computer with specs similar to his, he was shocked. People were only paying about half of what he thought he could get.

And that same analogy is true when it comes to fighter compensation. There is a lot of debate in the mixed martial arts media over what the UFC pays its fighters. It's easy to take the stance that the fighters deserve more pay.

Of course they do. Getting punched in the face or kicked in the head is about as difficult a profession as one could choose. You only get paid when you actually compete, meaning an injury in training — by your or by your opponent — means you've worked two months for free.

So fighters deserve as much as they can get. I have always and will always advocate for the athletes in this sport.

But, when Kalib Starnes split ways with the UFC last week, he called his deal with the UFC an oppressive contract. He complained about his pay.

Clearly, the top UFC fighters don't make nearly the amount that the top boxers make. But there is an incorrect perception that the other UFC fighters are being underpaid compared to boxers of the same level as well as fighters in the mixed martial arts community.

So I called the Nevada Athletic Commission and got the payment verification sheets for the last two major boxing shows (Bernard Hopkins-Joe Calzaghe on April 19 and Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15) as well as for the last major UFC show in the state, UFC 81 on Feb. 2.

According to state records, Hopkins and Calzaghe were each paid $3 million for their work. The next highest-paid fighter on that card was Audley Harrison, who made $20,000. There were nine fighters who made $5,000 or less, including two men, Marcos Mendias and Jermell Charlo, who made but $1,500.

Pacquiao made $3 million and Marquez $1 million for their epic rematch, but there were five fighters of the 14 on that show who made $3,500 or less.

At the UFC show, the lowest base pay for any of the 18 fighters on the card was the $4,000 that Kyle Bradley made.

The UFC also paid out $60,000 bonuses that night for knockout of the night, submission of the night and fight of the night. Plus, most of the fighters had bonuses for winning, so the opportunity was there for them to double their pay, which was not for the boxers.

And several agents, speaking on the condition of anonymity, have said the UFC occasionally pays its fighters bonuses it chooses not to announce to the public. These bonuses apparently go to fighters who perform superbly in a big fight.

Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre reportedly received a $500,000 bonus and a Hummer when he knocked out Matt Hughes at UFC 65 in Sacramento, Calif.

Additionally, fighting in the UFC makes an athlete significantly more attractive to a sponsor. Frank Mir made $85,000 for the logos he wore into the cage for his fight with Brock Lesnar that night. Had he been fighting in another organization, there's zero chance he would have earned half that in sponsorship money and he likely wouldn't have gotten 20 percent as much.

So Mir that night earned a base pay of $40,000, a win bonus of another $40,000, a submission of the night bonus of $60,000 and then hauled in $85,000 in sponsorship dollars.

He's not going to be able to retire after that bout, but bringing in $225,000 for one night's work isn't bad at any time, especially in this economy. A fighter like Chuck Liddell is making around $6 million a year between his salary and his sponsorships and was making at least $9 million little more than a year ago. He was getting $75,000 a month from Xyience and received $1 million for just two weekends of promoting the movie, "300."

"The UFC will pay you if you perform," said fighter agent Dean Albrecht, Mir's agent. "It's like in the NFL. They're not going to rip up your contract after one great game, but if you perform over a period of time, they'll pay you and pay you extremely well. In the UFC, if you go out and fight and put on a great show, believe me, they pay extremely well and they can make some of these kids rich."

Albrecht said another of his clients, Joe Lauzon, earned $8,000 for his bout with Kenny Florian earlier this month on Ultimate Fight Night 13. He would have gotten an $8,000 bonus had he won. Albrecht conceded the pay was low, but it was mitigated by a $20,000 fight of the night bonus and $52,000 in sponsorship money Albrecht negotiated.

He said if Lauzon had been fighting in a regional promotion, he would have made $2,000 to show, gotten $2,000 had he won and may have picked up another $500 in sponsorship. Even in the best case scenario, then, he would have made less than $5,000.

The IFL is bleeding money and likely won't last past its next show. Elite XC in its most recent SEC report also conceded it may not have the funds to last the rest of the year. If it's not able to pull at least a 2.5 rating on CBS for its May 31 show, it may be in jeopardy of failing.

The UFC, on the other hand, continues to thrive. It will provide a place for the fighters to sell their wares long into the future. There is no other North American-based promotion that can say that now other than the UFC.

So while the UFC should bump up the salaries of the fighters up and down the cards, given the rising merchandise sales, gate receipts and pay-per-view revenues, you also have to remember that they're the only ones who are thriving and can pay consistently. It's a two-way street.

Joe Doerksen Released By The UFC

mmanews.tk

Joe Doerksen is the latest casualty as the UFC continues to trim its roster of fighters. The UFC released the Winnipeg middleweight from his contract following a second-round loss to Red Deer, Alta.’s Jason MacDonald on April 19 in Montreal.

After falling to MacDonald at the Bell Centre, the writing was on the wall for Doerksen, whose loss was his third in a row in the Octagon (the first was with the WEC, also owned by Zuffa, the UFC’s parent company). But he wasn’t disappointed.

“(The UFC officials) made it very clear they’re very happy with the way I fight and they want me to come back,” Doerksen said. “But they need me to go put a couple of wins together (first).”

“It’s always a possibility whenever you lose,” Doerksen said. “I’ve come and gone several times over my career and I’m sure I’ll be back again. It’s not really devastating news. It’s just the cycle I have to go through.”

Doerksen (38-12) will be helping Jeremy Horn prepare for his preliminary bout against Dean Lister at The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale on June 21st before returning to active competition later this summer.

Velasco out of PFC 8, Georgianna in to face Klarcyk

mmanews.tk

By Jeremy Luchau - The PFC

LEMOORE, Ca. — Palace Fighting Championship World Bantamweight champion Rolando Velasco (5-0) of Oakdale had to pull out of a title defense against Porterville’s Shawn Klarcyk (7-2) on Thursday, May 8 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino.

Oregon’s Jason Georgianna (7-2) will come in to replace Velasco, take on Klarcyk and have a shot at winning the interim PFC title.

“We mainly kept the fight, because in fairness to Shawn and the fact that he has been training hard,” PFC President Christian Printup said. “This is right thing to do. They’ll fight it out in an interim bout, but that doesn’t make them the champion. They have to get through Rolando Velasco first. I think this is going to be good fight. Both guys are tough guys.”

The exit of Velasco due to injury wasn’t exactly what Klarcyk wanted.

Klarcyk was hoping for a rematch after Velasco took his title in January in what is one of the more debated fights ever in the PFC.

Velasco caught Klarcyk with a punch in the fourth round that sent him to the canvas where moments later referee Josh Rosenthal ended the fight by technical knockout.

At the time Klarcyk said, “I wasn’t out. I’ve been hit a lot harder than that in practice.”

Whatever the case, a rematch was what all parties involved wanted.

“I’m always willing to fight whoever PFC wants me to fight, but I would rather be fighting Rolando for the real bantamweight belt,” said Klarcyk, who is coming off of a submission victory over Anthony Garcia (1-1) in March at Gladiator Challenge.

Klarcyk and Georgianna will be key components in PFC 8’s “A Night of Champions” where four PFC World Titles will be up for grabs.

There are only 400 tickets left and they can be purchased at tickets.com or charge by phone at 1-800-225-2277. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and fights start at 6:30.

The PFC has sold out six straight MMA events at the Palace — PFC 5 was in North Dakota and was also a sellout and PFC 7.5 was recently held in Porterville at Eagle Mountain Casino where tickets were free of charge.

Georgianna has picked up a pair of victories since he last entered the PFC ring in January, where he was submitted by Sacrament’s Joseph Benavidez (4-0).

“I know we have the same record, 7-2. I watched a couple of his fights, so I know somewhat of his style,” Klarcyk said of Georgianna. “It doesn’t have any affect on my training that Rolando had to pull out of the fight or that I have a new opponent. I have been training to fight the PFC champ, so I’m ready to take down whoever gets in my way. I expect a war. I want my belt back.”

Also in championship action, Atlanta’s Diego Saraiva (11-6-1) will defend his lightweight title for the first time against Bakersfield’s Brian Cobb (11-4); Visalia’s Kenny Ento (9-3) defends his middleweight title against Santa Rosa’s Nate Loughran (7-0); and Oakdale’s Art Arciniega defends his featherweight belt against Fresno’s Jorge Evangelista.

In other bouts;

—Lemoore lightweight Poppies Martinez (14-4) vs. Huron’s Sergio Cortez (3-3)

—Oregon heavyweight Devin Cole (7-6) vs. Arizona’s Vince Lucero (18-13)

—Oxnard light heavyweight Lodune Sincaid (12-6) vs. Tulare’s Rafael Del Real (5-8)

—Sacramento lightweight Dustin Akabari (1-0) vs. Cody Canterbury (1-2)

—Sacramento bantamweight Joseph Benavidez (4-0) vs. Los Angeles’ Maurice Eazel (3-6)

—Sacramento lightweight Thonglor Armatsena (1-0) vs. Sacramento’s Noah Shinable (3-9-1)

—Lemoore featherweight Sergio Quinones (2-1) vs. Fresno’s Casey Olson (6-2)

—Mexico lightweight Olaf Alfonso (6-8) vs. Newport Beach’s Matt Doyle (1-2)

Weighins will be Wednesday, May 7 at 4 p.m. at the Den Sports Bar located on the third floor of the Palace.

"Mayhem" vs. Shibata at May 11 DREAM

mmanews.tk

Jason "Mayhem" Miller (20-5), the charismatic middleweight who's fought for nearly ever major MMA organization, will add the rookie DREAM promotion to his resume when he fights Katsuyori Shibata (2-3) at the organization's May 11 show.

The event takes place May 11 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

MMAjunkie.com today confirmed the bout with an event organizer. The fight was originally reported by MMANews.com.

Miller, who's long been on the cusp of a worldwide top-10 rating, will fight for the first time in five months. He last competed at a December HDNet Fights event in Dallas and survived a tough Tim Kennedy for a unanimous-decision victory. It was Miller's eighth win in his past nine fights; the lone loss came to veteran Frank Trigg at a December 2006 ICON Sport event.

Miller's only avenged losses are to Trigg, current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, and top WEC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen. Victories have come against the likes of EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler, popular PRIDE veteran Denis Kang, and Falaniko "Niko" Vitale.

However, Miller now faces a relatively inexperienced fighter in Shibata, who's competed almost exclusively for K-1 HERO'S (which eventually became DREAM) and is riding a three-fight losing streak. Shibata transitioned into MMA after working as a pro-wrestling performer in Japan.

The May 11 event, DREAM.3, is slated to feature the second round of the organization's lightweight grand prix.

Spratt stops Von Flue at UWC

mmanews.tk

Pete Spratt (18-12) defeated fellow former UFC fighter Jason Von Flue (12-10-1) in the main event of the Ultimate Warrior Challenge's recent "Invasion" show.

The event took place this past Saturday at the Patriot Center, which is located on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

In the main event of the night's nine-fight card, Spratt used shots to the body to set up a knockout at 2:34 of the first round.

Spratt returned to action for the first time since his second-round submission loss to up-and-comer Ryan Ford at a February Maximum Fighting Championships event. The former UFC fighter and "The Ultimate Fighter 4" cast member has now won three of his past four fights. He had previously suffered a string of three consecutive losses.

Von Flue, a cast member from "The Ultimate Fighter 2," meanwhile has lost his past four fights -- and six of his past seven.

Also in action at Saturday's event was veteran Thomas Schulte (17-6), who defeated former UFC and WEC fighter Zach Light (4-6) via first-round submission.

Former WEC welterweight contender Carlo Prater (22-6-1) and UFC/PRIDE vet Aaron Riley (24-10-1) also picked up victories at the event.

Saturday, June 7th, welterweight legend Matt Hughes begins his quest for an unprecedented third 170-pound UFC crown when he battles Brazilian banger Thiago “Pitbull” Alves in the main event of UFC 85, which will be held at the O2 Arena in London, England.

“Obviously Chuck Liddell's injury was a big blow, but as always our incredible fighters step up to give fans the best possible replacement," said Dana White, UFC President. "Now we will see an explosive matchup between top ten ranked contender Thiago “Pitbull” Alves and two time former UFC World Champion Matt Hughes. Alves is an ATT trained Muay Thai wrecking machine coming off of five straight wins and Hughes is a powerhouse wrestler who was the most dominant welterweight champion in UFC history. Charles McCarthy retires from MMA

mmanews.tk

UFC fighter Charles "Chainsaw" McCarthy, who suffered a TKO loss to Michael Bisping at this past Saturday's UFC 83 event, has announced his retirement as a mixed-martial-arts fighter.

The 27-year-old fighter confirmed the retirement in a prepared statement picked up by MMAWeekly.com.

McCarthy will remain involved in MMA and will continue running and teaching at his American Top Team affiliate, Ultimate Self Defense Academy, in Boca Raton, Fla.

"I would like to announce my formal retirement from [MMA] competition," McCarthy wrote. "I have achieved many of the goals I set out to accomplish in this sport and found others just out of reach. It is now time for me to lay down my gloves and rededicate my attention towards my business, my fighters, my family and my team.

"The successes I have found in my career are due in large part to all the great people who have helped me along the way. Being involved with the true champions at American Top Team has guided me to become a better father, husband, teacher and friend. Without the great generosity of ATT, my life would have had a void. I hope that everyone reading [this] can one day feel the love of a great family as I have."

McCarthy (10-5 MMA, 1-2 UFC) began his professional MMA career in July 2003 with the Absolute Fighting Championships organization, where he spent most of his career. He made his octagon debut at UFC 53 and suffered a TKO (via flying spinning back kick) to David Loiseau.

McCarthy then earned a spot on "The Ultimate Fighter 4," which was a special "comeback" season of the reality show that aired in 2006. However, the reclusive McCarthy earned the nickname "Captain Miserable" for his generally depressive attitude during the series. He suffered a unanimous decision loss to Pete Sell in the tournament's opening round but defeated Gideon Ray via first-round submission at the show's live finale.

After more than a 17-month layoff, he returned this past weekend at UFC 83. McCarthy suffered a TKO loss after an injured arm prohibited from answering the bell for the second round.

Monson, like Barnett, is a veteran of both the UFC and Pride Fighting Championships. Also like Barnett, he has been active in the sport for more than a decade. He last competed at Platinum Fighting Productions’ Ring of Fire event in Manila, Philippines.

The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rampage vs Team Forrest - Episode 4 Recap

mmanews.tk

Team Forrest jumped into the lead with a victory by Jesse Taylor on episode three. Will Team Rampage bounce back this week on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rampage vs Team Forrest?

Taylor, fresh off his submission win over Mike Dolce, is ecstatic about the victory, and predicting that his success will continue, saying, “I’m here for the long run.”

Back in the house, Matt Riddle and Dante Rivera are getting into it verbally with good-natured ribbing and taunts that many in the house believe are going to escalate into full-scale warfare after a while.

Team Rampage, looking to get on the board, works hard in practice, with their coach, UFC light heavyweight boss Quinton Jackson giving just as much of himself to them.

“I’m learning a lot,” said the first-time coach. “I believe in these guys.”

With fight selection looming, returning Team Rampage member Patrick Schultz believes he will be chosen to fight Rivera. But instead, Team Forrest decides to send MMA veteran Tim Credeur into battle against the relatively inexperienced, but talented, Riddle.

Rivera wastes no time trying to get into Riddle’s head.

“I’ll bet you $500 you don’t make it out of the first round,” said Rivera. Riddle laughs off the barbs and prepares for the fight.

Credeur, 10-2 as a pro, is focused for this pivotal bout and doesn’t have any intention of going home yet.

“I’m not here for the experience, for friends, or for a fun time,” he said. “I’m here for the job.”

At the pre-fight weigh-in Credeur tries to work a little psychological warfare into the fight, but Riddle continues to smile and laugh off any attempts by his opponent to break him mentally.

And once the fight starts, there is no blowout for the veteran, as Riddle gives as good as he gets on the ground, which is seen as Credeur’s domain. It’s a fast paced bout throughout with plenty of ebb and flow to the action, but it seems like Riddle is about to pull ahead in the final round when the two exchange on the feet. Surprisingly though,Riddle doesn’t keep the fight standing; instead, he takes Credeur down, a strategy that baffles Coach Jackson, who yells for his fighter to get back up. Riddle stays on the mat though, and Credeur capitalizes, locking in an armbar that forces Riddle to tap out, leading to a great deal of disappointment from Jackson.

With the win, Team Forrest jumps ahead 2-0. Here’s how the teams now look:

TEAM RAMPAGE

Daniel Cramer
CB Dollaway

On May 8th, at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino you were scheduled to take on Mickey "D" Martinez. This was going to be a awesome fight. Tell us about why this fight was cancelled and if it is going to be rescheduled?

Hit Boy:
Ill keep it short and simple, Sept 25th has been the date set for me to send Mickey "D" Martinez into retirement infront of his hometown!!

mmanews. tk:
you said you were weighing 270 at 1 time . What was your weight when you took the fight with Mickey "D" and would you have made 175 in time for the fight?

Hitboy:
I would of made "170lbs" with no problem, a high calf and bicep injury had prevented me to train at a high level for over a month and a half, my team had no idea I was injured, I tried to hide it as much as I could for fear of the fight being pulled, it was at the advice of my conditioning/boxing coach a good friend of mine James Fanshier that convinced me it would be in my best interest to post pone the fight to a later date.

mmanews. tk:
what is your current health and physical condition?

Hit Boy:
Since the fight has been re-scheduled I have taken the last 2 weeks off of camp to re-focus and allow my body to heal. My diet has actually improved and I am eating better than I was while I was training for the fight.

mmanews. tk:
You were also scheduled to fight for Gladiator Challenge on My 18th. Has that fight been cancelled also?

Hit Boy:
To be honest I had the toughest time securing that fight, I gave them over 3 months to send me a contract/confirm details, and to this date I have not gotten any confirmation/guarantee that my opponent was willing to step up and fight me. I wanted to fight one person and one person only PALIKA DRUMMONDO!! that fight was scheduled to take place at a catch weight of 175-180lbs. "PALIKA IF YOUR OUT THERE? STEP UP MY FRIEND AND LETS GET THIS THING GOING! PICK AN ORGANIZATION AND ILL MEET U IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING/CAGE!!" ( I would like to add that out of respect for the PFC and having to reschedule the May 8th fight, I decided that I would not fight on May 18th for Gladiator Challenge)

UFC cuts Kalib Starnes due to UFC 83 antics

mmanews.tk

It was a great night for mixed martial arts on Saturday in Montreal, as an enthusiastic sellout crowd of 21,390 packed the Bell Centre to watch hometown hero Georges St. Pierre reclaim the UFC welterweight title from Matt Serra at UFC 83.

It wasn't such a good night, though, for Kalib Starnes, who spent most of the evening running from Nate Quarry in their middleweight bout. A native of Surrey, B.C., Starnes was booed heavily by the Canadian crowd that had been boisterous in its support of all the other Canadians on the card.

After losing a unanimous decision on scores of 30-26, 30-27, and an unheard-of 30-24, Starnes received even worse news: He was cut from his contract by UFC president Dana White.

"He just doesn’t belong in the UFC and after his performance the other night, he should consider a new line of work," White said Monday.

Quarry pressed the action the entire fight as Starnes simply circled and refused to engage. Late in the third round, Quarry pretended to run like he was a track star in trying to find a way to get Starnes to fight.

After the bout, members of Quarry's corner were complaining to Starnes about his lack of activity. Starnes shouted an expletive at one member of Quarry's team, called him a derogatory term for homosexuals and challenged him to a fight.

Starnes couldn't be reached for comment about his performance, but Quarry expressed disappointment with Starnes' lack of effort.

A one-time contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, Starnes was 8-2 going into the bout and had had quality victories over Chris Leben and Jason MacDonald.

"I think if you're fighting in the UFC, you've got to come to fight," Quarry told UFC.com in a post-fight interview. "I would much rather get knocked out than lose a decision running backwards. No disrespect to Kalib. I know the stress really gets to you. A lot of guys, they focus on not wanting to lose instead of wanting to win. I didn't mean to disrespect him in any way. I just got frustrated because you can't fight when somebody's moving backward that fast."

Josh Barnett added to May 18 WVR card

mmanews.tk

Highly ranked heavyweight Josh Barnett (21-5), who's competed just once in the past 16 months, will next fight May 18 at World Victory Road's "Sengoku II" event.

The Japanese-based organization made the announcement earlier today.

An opponent hasn't been named for Barnett, who competed at the first Sengoku event and defeated Hidehiko Yoshida in March.

Barnett, a former UFC heavyweight champion and longtime PRIDE fighter, isn't the only big name appearing on the card, which takes place at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo, Japan.

The latest card, according to the official World Victory Road website, includes:

* Kwang Hee Lee vs. Eiji Mitsuoka
* Satoru Kitaoka vs. Ian Schaffa
* Jorge Santiago vs. Yuki Sasaki
* Yoshihiro Nakao vs. Jim York
* Dan Hornbuckle vs. Mike Pyle
* Roger Gracie vs. TBA
* Kevin Randleman vs. TBA
* Josh Barnett vs. TBA

Enoch Wilson Retains Sportfight Title

mmanews.tk

PORTLAND, Ore., April 18 -- It's not easy being Enoch Wilson.

Despite holding Sportfight's featherweight belt and being the hometown fighter, the crowd at the Rose Garden on Friday was almost uniform in its cheers for Wilson's Tacoma, Wash.-based challenger, Mike Joy.

But with Wilson's belt there for the taking in this main event championship fight, Joy was unable to make the crowd happy as Wilson definitively defended his title with a fourth round knockout.

Joy had his chances though. In the first round, he was able to neutralize Wilson's whirling jiu-jitsu style, and came close on a number of arm locks.

"Mike is a great competitor," Wilson said. "He fought tough tonight. He can take it to the ground well, too."

But in the second, Wilson was able to come back and take a little more control, gaining mount and smashing several fists to Joy's face.

Wilson was able to fight his style in the third: standing up and delivering twisting roundhouse blows.

In what turned out to be the final round of the fight, Wilson began to land his spinning strikes. Twenty-eight seconds into the fourth round, Joy dove fell face-first into a strong right knee that knocked him down and rendered him legless.

"I saw him slipping and went with the knee." Wilson said afterwards. "It caught him square in the face. It was kind of lucky I guess, but I was probably going to win the fight anyway."

Wilson, his hands raised, stood celebrating above the stunned Joy before the referee intervened.

Two fighters headed in opposite directions met in the co-main event, with Lyle Beerbohm emerging victorious in a 160-lb. catch-weight bout.

Beerbohm, famous for his day-glow streaked shorts -- made by his mother -- came into the fight undefeated, with his last three wins coming by way of guillotine and rear-naked chokes, including this month's XCC 6 win over Dave Knight. Nuno, on the other hand, was coming off a reality-check, title-forfeiting fight to Mike Pierce in the main event of Sportfight XXI last December.

At the first bell, Beerbohm ducked under a Nuno punch and dropped the former Sportfight title-holder to the floor. Beerbohm established position underneath Nuno for most of the first round, but was unable to fully clamp down a rear-naked choke. Near the end of the round, Nuno broke free and landed some fierce standing blows on Beerbohm, who was still on the mat.

The second round went much the same way, with Beerbohm establishing better wrestling position -- although not necessarily better position for the crowd, who found themselves staring at "Fancy Pants" in high definition on HDNet and on the big screens above the ring.

Nuno was able to get free again at the end of the round, but this time too late, as the bell rang before he could turn around and land a standing strike.

In the third, Nuno showed his dislike for Beerbohm's mother's handiwork by planting a kick firmly in the crotch of the fancy pants. Several missed roundhouse kicks by Nuno left him open to attacks, and Beerbohm took advantage, landing body blows and scoring points.

In the only fight of the night to go the distance, Lyle Beerbohm won a unanimous decision (29-27 three times). Nuno's low score reflected a docked point for a knee in the back in the third round that was just one of referee Hopi Jenkins controversial calls of the night.

Jenkins stepped in on four of the five fights he oversaw, and left at least two of those fighters feeling like they were declared the loser before the fight was clearly over.

Lightweights Dave Jensen and Tommy Truex came out of the ring with a fury, striking and dropping each other at breakneck speed.

Truex was game for the bout, standing his ground in the face of Jensen's late first-round barrage and waiting for openings to strike back. But Jensen threw too many strikes for Truex to block, and referee Jenkins was forced to step in for the fourth time of the night.

After taking a number of solid blows to the head, Truex was noticeably dazed, and Sportfight organizer Matt Lindland and Team Quest's resident jiu-jitsu expert Chris Wilson spent time patting the fighter -- from Greg Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque N.M. -- on the back.

Nathan Coy, freshly shaven after appearing at the weigh-in on Thursday with his standard between-fight Abraham Lincoln beard and short-cropped hair, took the fight to the mat in the second round, but only reluctantly.

Coy, a former All-American wrestler from Oregon State University, drew first contact on Jerrod Jones, who was fighting in his pro debut, with a swift kick in the first round. Coy appeared reluctant to use his grappling skills in the early going, perhaps hoping to prove that he is a more multi-dimensional fighter than previously suspected.

Coy spent much of the first round standing, dropping punishing right hands onto the face of a prone Jones. After a second round exchange left Coy off-balance, he appeared to decide that he had proved his striking point, immediately lifting Jones off his feet and dropping him to the mat. Coy quickly followed the drop by mounting Jones and delivering enough furious blows to force a tapout at 2:37 in the second round.

After the fight, Coy credited the win to his Team Quest trainers, calling them "the greatest in the world."

"I'm up here to win belts," he said, "[particularly] the Sportfight welterweight belt, which currently belongs to Mike Pierce. After tonight, I'm sure he'll fight me."

Pierce, who was waiting ringside, quickly jumped to the challenge, stepping into the ring in his street clothes and putting himself directly in Coy's face. He both accepted the fight and predicted a winner -- himself.

Lindland quickly inserted himself into the discussion, and made the fight official: Pierce's belt will be on the line at Sportfight XXIII on June 20.

Exciting young lightweight fighter Lance Wipf of Las Vegas was the better striker and arguably the better grappler in his bout against Arly George of Team Quest, but his inability to finish stretched the fight out to three rounds.

The inaction of the fight made the crowd restless -- the fighters were forced to break position and stand five times. At 4:23 in the third round the fight was stopped with Wipf a winner on strikes.

Super heavyweights Sunia Filikitonga and Thomas Naylor came together in a matchup of two men with a combined weight of 589 pounds. It was Filikitonga, of Houston, Texas, who used his fists to prove how hard and quickly fellow big man Naylor could fall.

Quickly pushing his opponent against the ropes, 300-pound Filikitonga landed crushing right after crushing right, causing referee Jenkins to step between fighters for the third time of the night. The record says that Thomas Naylor of Dallas lost his pro debut 41 seconds into his first round.

Josh Bennett entered the ring with a silly grin on his face, and Matt Kovacs did everything he could to wipe it off.

In what turned out to be a standing affair, these two heavyweights traded blows, with Kovacs showing himself to be the clearly superior striker, as well as having far better conditioning.

But referee Jenkins stepped in for the second controversial stopped fight of the night, giving Bennett the win 1:17 into the second round after he caught Kovacs with several knees to the body and a strong right-left combination. And as they did with the Dantibo-Krohn fight earlier (see below), the crowd showered their displeasure on Jenkins. All Kovacs could do was shake his head, believing that he could have rebounded and won the fight.

It took heavyweight Justin Moody just 48 seconds to slap a rear-naked choke on Andrew Pedersen.

Moody entered the ring with a big black cowboy hat, some desert-camouflaged shorts, and a superior plan to win the fight. Moody ducked under Pedersen's first advance and took the fight to the floor, where he used his superior conditioning and grappling skills. The 12 pounds Pedersen gave up to Moody at the weigh-in Thursday didn't help his cause either, as he was outweighed and overmatched in the short bout.

Two Oregonians collided in the first pro fight of the night, and they didn't disappoint. The bout, a middleweight matchup, featured first-time professional fighter Damian Dantibo going up against undefeated Jon Krohn of Team Quest.

Utilizing his conditioning, Dantibo rallied and found himself in a mounted position throwing fists and elbows at Krohn's face. As Krohn spun to avoid the blows, his defense fell, and referee Colby Jenkins stepped in to end the fight, much to the crowd's displeasure.

FEDOR ANNOUNCES FIGHT WITH SYLVIA IS OFFICIAL

mmanews.tk

Fedor Emelianenko announced on Friday via his personal website that he has officially signed to fight Tim Sylvia on July 19 in the United States. MMAWeekly has since confirmed the fight with independent sources close to the fight.

The announcement did not mention a specific show, but previous sources have indicated that it will be a promotion headed by clothing giant, Affliction.

The news on his website also stated that Fedor has signed on for two more fights to take place later this year in October and December, although no particular opponent or organization was named for either fight.

The fight in December is set to take place in Japan on one of the New Year’s Eve shows as Fedor plans on celebrating his sixth year in a row overseas.

This will be Fedor’s first fight since submitting Hong Man Choi at the Yarennoka event in Japan on New Year’s Even 2007, while Sylvia will face his first challenge since exiting the Ultimate Fighting Championship after being their champion on two separate occasions.

MONTREAL - The crown in the Bell Centre was electric as the Ultimate Fighting Championship held their first official weigh-ins in Canada for Saturday night's Serra vs. St. Pierre pay-per-view.

The stars of the show were of course current UFC welterweight champion, Matt Serra, and former champion, Montreal native, Georges St. Pierre.

The crowd erupted when George St-Pierre stepped on the scales. "I've been waiting for this a long time," St-Pierre commented, addressing the crowd. "Don't believe the hype. Believe what you're going to see Saturday night."

Matt Serra was greeted with boos from the Canadian crowd, as he expected. "If you're pissed right now, wait until Saturday night," Serra stated. "I'm ready to rock. You guys are going to be so pissed Saturday."

Serra repeatedly held up two fingers to the Canadian crowd in attendance while shouting "two times" to signify that he plans on defeating their native son for a second time.

All of the other fighters on the card made weight, although three separate competitors (Ed Herman, Charles McCarthy and Kalib Starnes) had to stand behind the infamous white towel to comply with the weight limits.

185lb newcomer, Michael Bisping, and his opponent Charles McCarthy shared a heated moment on stage as they stared each other down with both shouting at the other before being separated by UFC president Dana White.

Another intense moment happened as Canadians Jason MacDonald and Joe Doerksen faced off in a rematch of a fight the two had in 2005.
